If you want to just browse around and see what's out there, I usually head to the knitting directory first to get some general ideas and to see what my options are. After you find something you like the look of, then you can narrow it down to finding similiar patterns, or with using that particular one, and researching the kind of yarn you need and needle size(s) and whether any of the stitches are unfamiliar and need to be learned first.
If I come across a stitch I don't know how to do, I usually head to YouTube and watch this lady's instructional videos. She's very clear speaking and shows the techniques very well, and I've learned most of my more complicated stitches straight from her.
