Another question for the knitters

Hey all you knitting fends! I want to make a baby winter set for the baby I'm looking after now, but I want a pattern this time, as my "just go for it!" attitude made my last hat pretty difficult. Basically, I'd like to make a baby hat, mittens, scarf, and booties if I can. However, I have absolutely NO idea how to do anything with curves in it? I know I can look for myself, but being the novice that I am, I'm never sure if a pattern is really easy or harder than it looks. If anyone has any patterns or videos that they love, I'm all ears.

Okay not really, but hopefully I can help :P

I'm sure I can help you find the patterns you need, but I guess I should find out what you're comfortable with making, and what you're willing to try, first :) By "curves" I'm assuming you mean something that wraps around, like a glove or a jacket? Items that have a circular shape are usually knitted with circular needles or on double-pointed needles; neither are difficult but it can be intimating at first if you haven't worked with them before.

You would be able to get away with knitting the scarf and mittens as flat items which you then sew two sides together to make the mittens into a tube to fit a hand, but the booties and hat can ONLY be done on DPNs and/pr circular needles. Trust me, once you start using DPNs and circs, you won't look back :D

Did you still need helping finding patterns?

If you want to just browse around and see what's out there, I usually head to the knitting directory first to get some general ideas and to see what my options are. After you find something you like the look of, then you can narrow it down to finding similiar patterns, or with using that particular one, and researching the kind of yarn you need and needle size(s) and whether any of the stitches are unfamiliar and need to be learned first.

If I come across a stitch I don't know how to do, I usually head to YouTube and watch this lady's instructional videos. She's very clear speaking and shows the techniques very well, and I've learned most of my more complicated stitches straight from her.

Thanks a bunch! I will totally check out that site. I got a little bogged down in other things, but hopefully I'll find a good (aka easy) pattern on that directory so I can get started. At least I've got a full month to work on this stuff; doesn't get cold here in the South until late October anyway. Thank you so much!

Feel free to bug me any time if you have questions or get confused about anything. And I would definitely suggest starting as early as possible -- you tell yourself now that you've got a whole month, but that time will fly faster than you think when you've got a project to finish ;)
