So, Barack Obama is going to become the Democratic nominee for the 44th president of the United States of America. The first black to ever hold such a title. Can you believe, not just 143 years ago, probably would have been a slave in this country. Yesterday, Shepard Smith of the Fox News Channel said it best. At our country's inception, he would have been counted 3/5th of a person and 2/5th property. And going back to his Kenyan father's roots, it's only been 45 years since Kenya gained it's independence from Great Britain in 1963. America signed into law the Civil Rights Act in 1964, prohibiting discrimination on the basis of race. That was just 44 years ago. And in that short time, while it took my ancestors nearly 100 years to strike down discrimination, it only took us 44 years to get a black nominee. We're moving forward America. We really can change.

All that said, I am a true bipartisan moderate. I am proud beyond words that there is a positive black male role model at the forefront of these elections, and I hope a lot of black men will look up to him and aspire to do something positive with their lives like he has. But on the other hand, I have to take a step back from that and weigh the issues. Who do I think will be the best candidate to lead this country come next January? Will it be McCain that I vote for, or will it be Obama? I'm hoping the Clintons will be completely out of the picture, because I just can't see myself supporting an Obama/Clinton ticket. Then again, McCain hasn't announced his VP candidate either, so I'm a bit worried on both sides. Nevertheless, this was the election set-up I was hoping for. Now, no matter who wins, I think I'll be satisfied. I really like both candidates (for different reasons, of course), and I think both have some changes in mind that would be good for this country. The campaign trail is heating up and I for one am excited about it. You can bet that I'll be casting my absentee ballot in November!

I don't like any of them. It's disheartening when election time rolls around and nobody appeals to you. I'm not sorry to see Hillary go - she's a great big idiot.

That's how I've felt for the last two elections. Well, the last election especially. It almost makes you not want to vote at all, but that would be a disgrace to my ancestors. Elections where you don't like anyone makes you apathetic, which I think is a dangerous feeling around election time. I understand how you feel, but this election is really exciting for me. So many firsts are happening, so I'm taking it all in. When my grandkids ask me about it, my mind will be fresh and ready to answer questions! Maybe I think too far ahead in the future? ^^;;

I have mixed feelings about the whole 'first black president' thing. I get that it's an accomplishment and - believe me - I'm glad that we're trying to become a nation where positive changes are really happening. But I think it's going to take a lot more than some dude holding up a big sign that says 'CHANGE'. The nation's first female president would be an achievement too, but the fact that she has a vagina and I have a vagina isn't enough of a connection to entice me to vote for her. The fact that it's a political race makes truth and common sense completely superfluous anyway.

Here, this pulls everything together:

It might be worth it if Nader were like Ross Perot from the Bush/Clinton election. I think he got 19% of the vote as an independent, which is totally huge. Nader, unfortunately, doesn't get too many votes outside of his party.

This is my first presidential election, so I'm definitely voting. And even if I didn't like any of the candidates, I'd still vote. Been raised that way, what with parents who were born in the South where blacks couldn't vote. Pounded into my head, I guess. I think all the races in this country have done a lot to get the right to be heard by the federal government, so of course I think everyone should vote. But I also respect a person's right to choose what he or she should do, so I respect your decision as well.

I hadn't heard of him running but when i googled him I saw Nadar/Gonzalas 2008 I was pretty shocked.

This is my first as well, and I was raised the same way by my mom because it wasn't exactly like the Spanish were able to voice their choices so easily as well. (My dad who is white hates voting becuse he hates politics :/)

Neither represents me exactly so I can't say I have an urge to vote. But that's democracy and I'm okay with that.

I don't dislike Hillary, I just have my reservations about her. One of them is that she's not a great communicator. Obama really has the edge on her here - she's not good at luring the fence-sitters in. If you're interested in what she has to say, she doesn't do too bad a job. But if you're undecided, she's not very good at changing the way you think. I'd vote for her just to get Bill back into the White House. XD

Voting for Nader will be wasting a vote, but I might be okay with that this time around. This election is just as pitiful as the last one, in my very humble opinion. :(

Totally understandable, better then the other reasons I get such as "she's a bitch" or "she's just a woman".

Yeah I'm not really feeling the push of this election but I only suggested it because I had just found out he's still going to be running. I haven't seen where he stands on any isuse though, just glanced at his name.

Please, please, PLEASE stop lovin' John McCain. In the name of all that is holy D: Dude makes more contradictions a day than any language textbook.

"Yes, I was able to walk down the streets of Baghdad with no protection."
Um, the news just reported that you had to wear body armor and you had bodyguards...

Sigh.
