To Hetalia fans

Okay, I just have to ask this, because it's been bothering me for quite some time. To all the Hetalia manga/anime fans, why do you like it? I tried out the first two episodes of the anime and the first few strips of the comic, but I just don't get the appeal. I see so many people into it; hell, one of my students passed her Geography exam because she memorized all the countries! I used to look down on it because I thought it was a serious show about the Axis Powers, but upon learning that it's a comedy, I thought I'd give it a chance. Is there something about it that draws people in? I mean, stereotyping can be hilarious if done right, but Italy calling out "Pasta" in a near-orgasmic voice while America is arguing for an environment-cleaning robot just doesn't grab me. @__@

Outside of that, I feel a little disconnected from my online friends. I literally go through my day three pages of flist every morning in less than two minutes, so while I have skimmed everyone's posts, I have no time to comment on them. Feels kinda lonely, but the end of the semester grabs all of my time! ;__;

The first episode world meeting is based on a redo of the original comic, which is a bit funnier. I don't like the redo and when I saw they used it for the anime I was like "...but that version isn't funny..." Anyway, I prefer the comics over the anime, though I am watching it.

As for why I like it (namely the comics), well, it's because it makes me laugh. Hard. But I dunno, I enjoy dry humor. e_e

I actually feel pretty much the same way about Hetalia. XD; So many people I know are into it, so I read what I thought was the beginning of the manga, but... It really didn't do anything for me. I think the style is really cute, but... The story really didn't grab me... Hrm. So... I guess if you find out what it is that we're missing, let me know? ^_~

I'm looking into it because there's a cosplay thread on the Ayacon forums raving about it - I've yet to actually find an authentic scanlation of it, all I seem to find are doujinshi. So I have no idea if it's any good or not - though as others have said, the art is cute!

idk, I guess like it because I love the characters and I just find it funny (though there are some surprisingly touching strips too; the Chibitalia stips make my hear melt ;A;)…plus the fact that the fandom has become amazing is a big plus. +_+ I'm guessing the blatant BL factor has somthing to do with its surging popularity too…

And I like both the anime and the manga, but prefer the latter.

Yeah, I feel the same way as you. I have a friend who's been trying to pimp me on it for months and it just leaves me cold despite my best efforts to read past the first five or six strips online.

I think the appeal lies in the potential for fandom, but if you're an artist and can draw the characters in funny situations. Cause as a ficwriter, I just don't see any appeal in writing stories about 2d anthropomorphised countries.
